Are Hybrid Cars The Way Forward?
The mere mention of a hybrid will usually be met with sniggers from mocking motor heads. But is it possible that electric cars’ image is changing from a luxurious novelty to one of practicality? The UK government has announced it will provide grants of up to £5,000 for nine electric cars as a part of a new subsidy scheme in an effort to increase electric car usage.
Toyota unvelied it’s Prius hybrid model back in 1997, but it was met with scepticism amongst many car executives. Some hybrid cars have been laughed at for being cramped and impractical, one example being Honda’s hybrid that was released in the U.S in 1999. Surprising to some, it is estimated that 2 million Prius had been sold worldwide. Sales of the sub compact Toyota Yaris and the compact Corolla have been at the heart of Toyota’s marketing, but there have been poor sales of late with Corolla Sales slumping 26 percent and Yaris 41 percent; which is why the Prius has become integral for Toyota. While in 2009, the Prius was Japan’s top-selling car and the world’s most popular hybrid model. Toyota often includes accessories such as satellite navigationas an extra incentive into buying a Prius. However this isn’t to say that there have been a few glitches for Toyota’s hybrid, well perhaps ‘glitches’ is a bit on the soft side, will catastrophe suffice?
In February 2010 Toyota announced the recall of about 436,000 hybrid vehicles from across the globe. This amounted to 200,000 Prius models sold in Japan, and 8,500 cars across Britain. Toyota blamed software glitches and promised to write to vehicle owners affected and the repairs would be carried out free of charge. Humiliating was an understatement, not only for Nissan but for the concept of hybrid cars. It may have many questioning the government’s subsidy scheme planned for the New Year. Obviously car leasing deals may provide less risk for consumers but that’s not to say it won’t put people off the concept of electric cars.
