How to start a small custom automotive shop.?
I’ve been looking all over the net and haven’t found exactly what i want to know. Somewhere in the future (if I decide or am able to do it) I would like to have a small custom automotive shop starting from my home then maybe become bigger. I would like to offer things such as a detail shop, aftermarket accessories, and car audio. I might add other things later such as window tinting, graphics, etc. I guess my main question is how do you become a dealer for such products like if I wanted to offer Kicker, Memphis audio, pioneer, Planet audio, kenwood, etc. Also other accessories like putco, bulley, lund and so on. It’s mainly to be able to buy at dealer cost. If anyone has any info about this line of work please let me know……..Thanks
The chances are your city has zoning in effect that would not allow a commercial retail venture from a residential zoned house. So step one will be to contact the city zoning department, and find out what your property is zoned as, and what is allowed in that zoning.
Chances are you will need to buy or rent property in a commercial zone, and have both a business license and a tax license to collect and pay sales tax.
You’re got a lot of homework to do. Ask retailers that are already in the business what it took to get started.
