Almost every home needs a vacuum cleaner of some sort. Whether a house has wall-to-wall carpeting or floors are mostly tile or hardwood, a vacuum cleaner comes in handy for cleaning a variety of messes. To determine the right kind of machine for your home, consider these five factors.

1. Handheld or full size? Do you need a full-size vacuum cleaner or just a hand vacuum? If your home has several carpeted rooms and high volume of traffic, you will probably want to invest in a full-size machine, either an upright or canister style. If you have very little carpeting and mostly need a vacuum for spot clean-ups, a handheld model may be enough. Handhelds are cheaper, smaller and more portable. They do not generally have the power and suction of a full-size machine, though, so many people opt to own both – a full-size vacuum cleaner to do large-scale cleaning and a handheld vacuum to clean up small messes.

2. Where will you use it? If you’re going to be cleaning stairs or a room with a lot of furniture, a canister style vacuum cleaner may be preferable. With a canister model, you mostly position the machine’s suction hose to vacuum, rather than pushing the entire machine everywhere you want to clean. The hoses are flexible and easy to move around obstacles or into awkward spaces, and the suction attachments are generally safe for bare floors, such as tile or hardwood, or delicate carpets. They are also often lighter than upright vacuum cleaners, which can be helpful if you must carry the machine up and down stairs.

However, for large open areas, uprights can be faster and easier. Upright vacuum cleaners are often self-propelled, making them easy to push, and compared with canisters, they usually have larger storage containers – either a bag or a bagless chamber -for suctioned dirt and debris, meaning fewer stops to empty them.

3. How much power do you need? If you have a high degree of traffic and frequent, deep soiling, you may need a high-powered vacuum cleaner. But if your floors stay relatively clean most of the time, a lower power model may suit your needs just fine for less money. Lower-powered cleaners are often lighter and easier to move, as well.

4. How much maintenance? Most vacuum cleaners require some kind of maintenance, such as changing bags, filters and belts, as well as occasional repairs. An expensive, high-end model may have higher maintenance expenses as well as a higher up-front cost. And an obscure brand may have a low price tag, but you may have trouble finding supplies. Consider how easy and affordable it will be to maintain the vacuum cleaners you’re considering.

5. What accessories do you need? Most vacuum cleaner models come with a package of accessories or have attachments available for extra purchase. Common accessories include special filters, heads and brushes for cleaning specific types of surfaces or upholstery, and attachments for accessing crevices or hard-to-reach places. If a model comes with a host of accessories you don’t need or adding attachments will cost extra, there’s no need to pay more for them. But you want a machine that will suit your cleaning needs, so if you need attachments, consider them in the cost of the vacuum cleaners you are considering.
