how do i put this belt back on my CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;(?
ok so when i got home the other night my car was making a funny noise… then i got up in the morning to leave, i started my car and it was still making this loud squeaking noise, it kept doing it for about 5 minutes then it stoped and my power stering went out so i went back home and poped my hood and the accessory drive belt routing was jameed up ! how do i get the belt back on?…. my car is a 1993 pontiac grand prix 3.1 HELP! lol
It’s called a serpentine belt and it runs all of your accessories.
The belt is held tight with a tensioner …the tensioner is usually just a pulley mounted on a small arm. There is a large spring inside the tensioner to keep the belt snug.
In order to reinstall the belt correctly you’ll need a diagram of how it’s routed (sometimes this is on a decal under the hood) and you’ll need a socket wrench with a long handle (sometimes called a “cheater bar”). You route the belt around the pulleys then use the cheater bar and socket to pull back on the tensioner against its spring pressure. You slip the belt under the tensioner pully then ease off on the cheater bar. The released tensioner takes up the slack in the belt and you’re back in business.
If this sounds too complicated then you’ll need to get the car to a shop for them to do it. Just realize that the belt also runs the water pump …without the water pump running you stand a good chance of overheating the engine. If the shop is only a couple of miles then you may be able to get your car there before it overheats.
