My car wont start, and it’s not the battery! Possibly the ignition switch?
I have a 97′ Jetta (manual) and it died the other day. I went to dinner, went back to my car and it wouldn’t start. I thought it might have been the battery, but I bought a new one, and had a friend put it in, and still nothing. (He cleaned everything really well so it’s not build up) Could a faulty ignition switch cause the car not to start??? The past 2 months every now and again all my accessories will stop working (windshield wipers, air vents, lights) and I’ve heard that goes back to a shotty ignition switch. Is it possible that it finally gave out and wont start at all??? I know the other option could be the starter, but my starter has gone out before and I know what that sounds like. (It sounds like its trying to turn over but can’t) This is just NOTHING when I turn the key. Any help would be appreciated!
Its hard to say without seeing what is turning on and going off with the switch in acc, off, on, start positions. It can be the switch as they are a wearable part of car having bad contacts. It also can be a loose connection on the ignition connector, or a bad ground somewhere. Also be aware that some cars have a computer that cuts off ignition if you are not using a factory ignition key. And if the clutch engaugement switch isnt working, it can cut out starter too. Its like a neutral safety switch on automatics. Good areas to think about.
