What would cause the car’s engine to rev (rpm’s increase on the tach) when power windows are operated?
It also happens when I turn the steering wheel (power steering) or when I turn on an accessory such as defrost or heater/blower. In addition to the engine revving, it shutters a bit too. It usually revs up about 300-500 rpm +/- whenever I do any of the above.
Its not the load on the alternator that causes the increase in the rpm’s – its the load seen by the engine when the alternator load increases. The alternator draws more mechanical power from the engine when the regulator “kicks” from having a power drawing accessory get turned on. This increase drag causes the engine to surge a little.
The defrost turns your air conditioner on – it does this to dry out the air supplied to the windshield vent. The air conditioner compressor draws engine power, resulting in the engine surging to keep up.
The steering wheel has a power steering pump – when you turn the steering wheel, the pump requires additional power to supply the hydraulic fluid your steering system uses – again causing the engine to surge a little.
Its all pretty normal behavior.
