The Honda Insight Vs The Toyota Prius
Toyota recently released their new price for the 2010 Prius. With a MSRP of $23,500 on the Prius is a few thousand dollars more expensive than its main competitor; the Honda Insight, which has a MSRP of $19,800. The Insight is now the least expensive hybrid out on the market in the U.S.
The Insight offers an ECO Assist system which enhances fuel economy further by controlling acceleration rates and helping the driver drive learn how to drive more economically.The ECON setting can be switched off so that the insight will produce more HP, or when left on the car will help you drive more efficiently.The integrated motor assist helps out the puny hybrid engine by giving it a horepower boost via and electric motor. This new technology further reduces weight, saves on manufacturering costs, and adds to the overall cabin space. Variable Valve Technology is used in the Insight motor which also helps perfomance.For about the price of a base mopdel Prius, you can get a nicely equipt Insight that comes with: rims, USB integraded stereo, navigaion with voice recognition, and steering wheel mounted shifter. Just looking at the Prius and Insight will give you some information that Honda is copying the Prius in design, form, and function.
Opposed to the Insight is the Prius with a 160-hp 1.8 liter motor has three sttings for operation. The EV mode allows the Prius to run on battery power alone, the ECO mode’s responsibility is to ensure the optimum gas mileage is obtained, and then the Power Mode give more power and throttle response.Toyota has a new Smart Collision system called the PCS which is available on the new Prius. This system comes equipped with a radar that constantly measures the distance of the car ahead and presumably adjusts brake pressure when probability of frontal collision is high. The Prius also includes a new touch sensor system on the steering wheel to ensure safe driving.
When it comes to price the Insight is hands down the winner, but the gas mileage rating is another story altogether. The Honda has a reported 40-city mpg, 43-highway, and a combined mpg of 41; while the Prius has mpg of 48-city, 45-highway, and 46 of combined mpg.Traveling more than 20,000 miles in only 365 days (when gas is $2.50 a gallon), owning the Honda would cost $1219 in gas per year and owning a Prius would cost $1086 per year. When you drive a Prius, the amount of gas saved compared to an Insight is about 53 gallons, so to cover the lower price you would have to drive for 27 years.Even though the Toyota nets better MPG, the Honda is still a better value due to its low price!
